Introducing The Plot
While taking a stroll through downtown Norfolk around Main St. and Granby St., you've probably noticed a ton of activity over the last few months on a prime piece of real estate that used to be reserved for the Weston Hotel and Conference Center. With the approval of City Council, an entire host of volunteers have slowly transformed the eyesore into a welcoming public space that will include parking for food trucks, a basketball court, green space, and a small stage. The park will be known as The Plot.
The Plot will be a temporary park while planners decide what to do with the space for the long-term, but from the sound and look of it, this will be a much needed space. You have Town Point Park for festivals but other than that, it's just not a comfortable space. The Plot is going to be designed for people to relax in and gather socially. There will be shade, wireless Internet access, trees decorated in tree socks, and comfortable benches.
One of the really cool features of The Plot is that volunteers are reclaiming recognizable items from Norfolk's past and incorporating them into the park. These include:
- Shipping containers to represent the economic vitality of Hampton Roads
- Planters from the old Granby Mall
- Bleachers from The Scope
- Timber from the Boathouse for benches
The city dropped the ball on Town Point Park but with The Plot, it sounds like their mildly redeeming themselves. For more information on this project or to volunteer, visit here.
