New Ghent Development Could Bring Fresh Market

A few weeks ago, a new mixed-use development was announced for West 21st St. in Ghent.  Today, The Pilot is reporting that Norfolk City Council will meet December 11th to approve the deal and that a major component of the deal could be a much-anticipated Fresh Market.

Under the proposed plan, 21st Street Partners LLC would purchase the 3.5 acre land from the city, demolish what's there now, and develop the land initially into a two-story medical office building and  retail space.  Then a gourmet grocer would spend the money to build its store.

The deal doesn't specifically name the gourmet grocery, however, Vice Mayor Anthony Burfoot and Councilman Barclay Winn let the cat out of the bag and confirmed it was a Fresh Market.  The store would hire up to 90 employees.

Construction could begin next summer and last about a year.
