Virginia Zoo Wellness Center Short On Funds, But Pushing Forward

The Virginia Zoo, located in Norfolk, still plans to break ground on the $4 million project that will include an 8,000-square-foot veterinary hospital and a 3,000-square-foot nutrition center.  However, despite the money the city of Norfolk has allocated, the Zoo still may come up short of its goal. This project evolved out of the need for a facility large enough to accommodate the growing number of animals added from last year's "Asia - Trail of the Tiger" exhibit and to maintain accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

According to the Virginia Zoo's website, the addition will be critical to the health of animals.

"The new veterinary hospital and animal wellness campus will not only deliver the highest level of animal care, but will also provide an educational experience, providing information on animal medicine; the benefits of good nutrition, outdoor activity and exercise; and how our food is grown – including living fruit orchards and vegetable gardens."
The facility will also double as a feature for visitors.

"Visitors will be able to look though viewing windows into treatment, surgery and laboratory rooms, and the animal diet kitchen. One of the goals of the project is to inspire children to pursue careers in the medical sciences," said Zoo officials.

The campaign needs to raise another $1 million to finance the project. If you would like more information or would like to donate, click here.
