Governor's School Expanding Downtown Campus
The Governor's School for the Arts in Norfolk will begin a $9 million building renovation at the Monroe building at 254 Granby St. in downtown Norfolk later this summer. The renovations will support five of the six departments of the GSA: instrumental music, musical theatre, theatre, visual arts and vocal music. The Todd Rosenlieb Dance studio on Granby will continue to hold classes for the dance department, while the 80-piece orchestra will rehearse at the Virginia Arts Festival building, just around the corner.
The state-of-the-art renovation will provide 43,000 square feet to students and faculty using all six floors of the building, while an additional 10,700 square feet will go to the Wells Theatre for new dressing rooms and backstage space. This project is due for completion in August of 2013.
According to the Pilot, "The Governor's School serves 355 gifted high school arts students from eight area school districts. Those enrolled study academics at their home schools and take part in advanced arts programs in the afternoons with Governor's School."
Nice, dind't know they were doing anything with that building. I have seen a lot of activity there over the past months.
