Virginia Business recently announced that construction will begin shortly on a $24 million expansion of the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk.
According to Virginia Business, the plan is to add 8,000 square feet of exhibition space to allow the museum to display works that have been kept in the museum's warehouse."The expansion is expected to transform the museum, which currently has 210,000 square feet of space on two floors. An additional 8,000 square feet of new gallery space in two new wings will flank the museum’s main entrance. The additional space will allow more works to be shown from the museum’s collection and will provide opportunities to showcase new acquisitions."The plans also call for an update to its cafe and catering facilities, which will be relocated to the front of the building and have a separate entrance. The purpose is to use the cafe outside of museum hours and provide outdoor seating.
The museum will remain open through 2012, but will shut its doors for 2013. The renovation is scheduled for completion in early 2014, with a grand reopening in April.
