As part of a busy City Council meeting last week, a proposal was made for Norfolk to start a bike share program. This would result in up to 50 bike stations set up throughout the city carrying up to 350 bikes total with the goal of getting cars off the roads.

Norfolk has made a recent push to become more bike-friendly and this is just another initiative in that direction. According to WAVY, the plan would be to integrate this with light rail and bus systems and then branch out to other cities. To start the project, it'd cost just over $2 million with grants and private sectors handling most of the cost. Another $1 million would operate the program, however, advertising revenues and fare box recovery would offset that. Next, Norfolk must apply for the grants, complete a plan, requests for proposals and launch a pilot.
