Local Business Profile (Better Block Edition): Artist Jessy Davis

Last week, Norfolk Live! got to know some of the local businesses featured at Better Block in the proposed Norfolk Arts District.  Today, we feature artist Jessy Davis, who played a major role in sprucing up the neighborhood with her "hot dog" crosswalk and  "Oops-A-Dazies" that decorated the Texaco Building.
What do you do?

JD: I am a Virginia Beach, Virginia artist working with metals and recycled materials. My process is unique and my designs are fun and funky. These one-of-a-kind works of art are all hand cut and pieced together. I work with a variety of metals but always try to incorporate color with the use of recycled cans, tins, trays and found objects.

What is your background in art?

JD: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)Design and Visual Communications for University of California at Chico. I have worked as a Graphic Artist, Art Instructor, Illustrator, and Fine Artist.

Do you have a gallery?

JD: I have my work at The Artists Gallery in Virginia Beach. I also sell my pieces at Curious Cargo & Boardwalk Flags in Virginia Beach, Nomad's Gallery in Tallahassee, Florida for some jewelry. The "Oops-A-Dazies" from Better Block will be for sale at Curious Cargo and Boardwalk Flags.  You can visit my website at www.jessydavisart.com for more details on where to buy my products.

Can people buy your products online?

JD: I don't sell online. People can stop by and see the wonderful people who sell my work and buy them there. I have fresh new things showing up all the time. Always one-of-a-kind, handmade, recycled and unique. I do, however, take custom orders through my website and have had the privilege to make works for people all over the country.

How can people get a hold of you?

JD: You can message me through my website or on my Facebook page.

As a local artist, what would you like to see in the proposed arts district?

JD: I love the investment in locally-created public art that the city has done so far. I hope that it can continue for years to come. I would love to see some more playful, fun artwork in the district (like hot dog crosswalks!).  I want to be a part of it! This is a great place to be right now.

Jessy will be at Haynes Furniture in Virginia Beach (5324 Virginia Beach Blvd.) this Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. selling her Oops-A-Dazies.
